Student Led Groups

Student Led Groups

Student Leadership Groups (SLGs) empower students to use their voices to advocate for arts education across Maine. As the student-led wing of the Arts Are Basic (ABC) Coalition, SLGs provide young people with opportunities to develop leadership skills, collaborate with peers, and share the impact of arts education on their lives.

Arts Ed Advocacy – Student Led Groups

Student Leadership Groups are student-centered advocacy teams connected to the Arts Are Basic Coalition. Made up of arts-engaged high school students from across the state, SLGs bring student perspectives into statewide conversations about arts education. Through collaboration, reflection, and participation in advocacy events, students build confidence, practice leadership, and contribute meaningfully to efforts that support access to the arts for all learners.

The History of SLGs

Student Leadership Groups (SLGs) were established in 2020 as part of the Arts Are Basic Coalition’s statewide advocacy efforts. The inaugural group of students was formally recognized at the Blaine House, the Governor’s residence, underscoring the importance of student voice in arts education advocacy.

Student Viewpoints

“Through art, we learn to see the world differently, express ourselves authentically, and to connect with others on a deeper level. We develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Moreover, arts education improves our lives. It fosters empathy and understanding of different cultures and perspectives. It provides a healthy expression of emotions and a space for personal growth.

So, the next time someone tells you art class is unimportant, remember: it’s not just about the final product, it’s about the process, skills, and experiences that shape who we become. Let’s fight to keep arts education alive, not just for our own personal growth, but for a more creative, expressive, and understanding world.”

Youth Art Month & Advocacy Day

Each spring, during Youth Art Month, MAAE helps coordinate advocacy efforts that celebrate student creativity and highlight the impact of arts education across Maine.  A centerpiece of this work is Advocacy Day at the Maine State House, where students and educators share artwork, performances, and personal stories with legislators and community leaders.

These events provide students with meaningful opportunities to:

      • Share their creative work publicly
      • Practice civic engagement
      • Speak about the role of the arts in their education
      • Connect learning to real-world contexts
