Building Community Through the Arts: Creativity in the Classroom

by | Jan 4, 2026 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

Creative learning experiences can transform the classroom environment. When students are encouraged to collaborate, move, create, and express ideas together, learning becomes more connected and meaningful.

Building Community Through the Arts (BCTA) is a program of the Maine Alliance for Arts Education that places professional teaching artists into classrooms to work alongside educators and students. Through theatre and dance, BCTA supports creative, collaborative learning experiences that strengthen both academic engagement and classroom community.

Why Theatre and Dance?

Theatre and dance offer unique opportunities for students to:

  • Explore ideas physically and collaboratively
  • Build confidence and self-expression
  • Strengthen listening and teamwork skills
  • Engage learners with diverse strengths and learning styles

By integrating these disciplines into classroom learning, BCTA helps create inclusive experiences that reach students who may not always connect through traditional instruction alone.

Arts Integration That Focuses on Process

BCTA is designed around arts integration — using creative practices as tools for learning rather than focusing solely on performance outcomes.

Teaching artists collaborate with classroom educators to guide students through:

  • Creative movement and theatre activities
  • Collaborative problem-solving
  • Communication and reflection
  • Original student-created work

The emphasis is on process over product, allowing students to explore ideas, take creative risks, and work together in supportive learning environments.

    Benefits for Students and Educators

    BCTA residencies support:

    • Stronger classroom relationships
    • Increased student engagement
    • Opportunities for creative expression
    • Collaborative teaching and learning

Educators and teaching artists work together to adapt experiences to classroom goals and student needs.

      Bringing BCTA to Schools

BCTA residencies are developed in partnership with schools and are often supported through grants and community partnerships. This approach helps make arts-integrated learning accessible to a wide range of schools and students.

Through creativity, collaboration, and connection, Building Community Through the Arts helps transform classrooms into vibrant learning communities.
